The Mouth » Bone Grafts

A bone graft is a surgical procedure that is usually performed in cases where there is insufficient bone in the jaw to place dental implants. Bone grafts help to replace any missing bone if required. The procedure involves grafting or transplanting bone tissue from bone substitute materials or your own bone from other areas.

Bone grafting can be extremely beneficial in building up the bone in areas where the lack of bone may preclude the ability to place dental implants.

Mr Aakshay Gulati offers a thorough consultation in order to decide which type of bone graft will be used. He will also be able to discuss how the procedure will be performed, what to do before the surgery and how to ensure the best after care.

The Procedure

The bone grafting procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic, and will be painless. An incision will be made into the gums where the graft is required. The area is packed with the bone graft material and closed with stitches. Sometimes (depending on the available bone), it may be possible to place an implant at the same time as performing the bone graft. On other occasions, a healing period of a few months may be required prior to embarking on the implant procedure.

After care

During your consultation, Mr Aakshay Gulati will give you a thorough guide of your recovery time depending on the size of the graft and other factors. .
