Head & Neck Surgery » Neck Lumps

A lump in the neck can be caused by a variety of causes and are often very common. Most lumps in the neck are harmless and non-cancerous, but it always recommended to have them checked.

They are usually due to the lymph glands being swollen or enlarged, which can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection and rarely cancer.

Lumps in the neck can also be caused by the salivary glands.

Whilst the majority of these are benign (non-cancerous), it is important to assess them early and establish whether they warrant removal. Investigations of these lumps can be in the form of ultrasound scan, MRI scan, CT scan or combination of these. Sometimes a needle test can also be performed to help establish the nature of the lump prior to embarking on any treatment.

The lump may require removal and sent to the laboratory for assessment under the microscope. Mr Aakshay Gulati will be happy to discuss the procedure with you in detail, explain the possible risks and prepare you for the surgical procedure.

Follow-up appointment/s are required after the procedure to discuss the results and assess healing.

The Procedure

Mr Aakshay Gulati will give a thorough explanation of the procedure during your consultation. Whilst small lumps may be removed under local anaesthetic, the majority do require a general anaesthetic. The lump is then analysed in a laboratory to check for any cancerous cells and establish the exact diagnosis. The skin is brought together with stitches which require removal in 5-10 days depending on the lump.

After care

You may experience some pain after the procedure, and might require the stitches to be removed a few days afterwards. There may be a slight swelling and redness around the area which will reduce a few days following the procedure. The exact nature of 'what to expect' after the surgery will be discussed during your consultation as this may vary in different cases.
